Title (Masters)

Hypervolition: Our Sacrifice of Choice.

Title (Doctoral)

Hypervolition, Imposed Desire: A Multi-Method Realist Investigation of the Simulation, Prediction, Influence, and Manipulation of Consumer Decision-Making and Consumer Desire.

Abstract (Masters)

This research critically examines the evolution of discipline and governance within society, our relationship with technology, our desires and how we influence them and how they can be influenced, our tendencies to customise experiences for ourselves, the proliferation of the use of algorithms in our everyday lives, and introduces a new term, hypervolition, which is defined as inability of consciousness to distinguish our true desires and choices, from our algorithmically deduced and imposed desires and choices.

It defines the Jevinian Orders and Phases related to the term, which extends Foucault’s concept of disciplinary power, and Han’s ideas on the neuronal within the framework of Jean Baudrillard’s hyperreal, and creatively express the concepts through the art works "My.o.T," "Inter Alia," "In Plain Sight," and "The Resistance".

Abstract (Doctoral)

This realist research studies the simulation, prediction, influence, and manipulation of consumer decision-making and consumer desire, and aims to understand how marketing strategies classified within these categories work, why, and under what circumstances.

There were three key stages of this research: 1. Classification Framework and Initial Programme Theories Development; 2. Study; 3. Results Synthesis, and two research methods employed in the study: Rapid Realist Reviews (five); and Experiments (two). Protocols and preregistration forms provided an a priori documentation of the reviews and experiment. The conduct and reporting of the methods, findings, and synthesis were guided by compliance with RAMESES I and II conduct and publication standards.
